I was a bit disappointed to discover that they nerfed the helicopters in that there's like a 2 second cool-down between each rocket fired and this mechanic was not in the game when i last played it ages ago.
It's been like that, except maybe in some beta or short lived early version of the game. Maybe you remember another game/mod.
Vanilla BF Vietnam is kind of obsolete and doesn't bring much over other games, except maybe the sound when played with an old Creative sound card.
